The World we Live In

Bowman Academy

In order to prepare pupils for the diverse society that we live in, Bowman Academy provides an ethos and environment that promotes respect and values diversity. We are committed to; teaching our pupils about the world we live in, developing their independence, resilience and respect in order to prepare them for the world outside Bowman.

We do this through our broad curriculum which encompasses; disability, race, religion, LBGT+, political issues, democracy. This is delivered through weekly PSHE, RE and British Value lessons in the classrooms and continued outside the classroom through all aspects of our pupils social and emotional learning. All staff promote and facilitate discussion around the world we live in to provide support and challenge stigma for our pupils.

An essential part of this learning is delivered through British Values lessons. We deliver British Values lessons which teach pupils current affairs through Picture News. Picture News enables pupils to develop pupils understanding and appreciation of the news of the world. The school has a weekly poster as a focus which represents a current issue within the wold – a piece of news represented in a picture. Each class has this poster displayed in the classroom and the British Value lesson encourages exploration, discussion, challenge and inspiration surrounding the issue represented in the poster.

The five fundamental British values are:
• Democracy
• The rule of law
• Individual liberty
• Mutual respect
• Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

By having regular conversations about the news, a whole range of topics are shared and together we can make more sense of different events, issues and stories and support our pupils to grow up as global citizens.
